Food Stamps By Ethnicity

This data shows the percentage of U.S. households receiving SNAP benefits broken down by ethnicity. SNAP, formally known as food stamps, helps low-income families who struggle to make ends meet buy food. The program costs taxpayers around 100 billion dollars a year, which is about 2% of the federal budget.

To explain this graph a little more in depth, there are 54.5 million white families in the U.S. compared to just 50,814 Afghan families. While 45.6% of Afghans (23,195 families) receive SNAP, that’s still much smaller than the 8.6% of white families receiving SNAP which equals about 4.69 million families. A higher percentage doesn’t mean a higher number of recipients but instead shows the rate of reliance within that specific group.

It’s important to note that the graph highlights a selection of ethnicities where we tried to include the largest population groups and the ones with the highest percentages. With hundreds of ethnic groups in the U.S., it’s not possible to include every single one in a single post. If there is a group you would like to see represented, let us know or check out the full table available from the U.S. Census.
